The Story

On New Year's Day of 759, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, posted as a governor far from the capital, opened the year with a blessing: like today's falling snow, may good things pile up and up. It is the very last poem of the Man'yōshū — the anthology's four and a half thousand poems close on this prayer of hope, from a man in the provinces who chose blessing over bitterness. Our song lays his heart over a modern winter of starting over: on nights when only excuses pile up, snow falls — pile up, pile up, only good things.

Lyrics

English

Beyond the window, the town turns white

Excuses pile up over what just won't go right

I didn't abandon the capital—it abandoned me

On a night I sulked like that, snow begins to fall

At the start of a brand new year

As if counting an untouched day

In the new year, at the beginning of early spring

May the snow that falls today bring abundant blessings

Pile up, pile up—only the good things, pile up

In these hands, I wait for spring

Born into a noble house in the land of Inaba

I bend beneath the weight of the name I inherited

The clan that once flourished is now a distant past

Like watching a sinking ship drift away

Carrying words of celebration through the feast

But truly, I was praying for a spring of sprouting greens

In the new year, at the beginning of early spring

May the snow that falls today bring abundant blessings

Pile up, pile up—only the good things, pile up

On this unfavored day, I wait for spring

In the new year, at the beginning of early spring

May the snow that falls today bring abundant blessings

The ancient one too saw this same snow

And was praying for tomorrow to come

The light snow will melt and become a river

Crossing fields, to the sea, beyond time

In the new year, at the beginning of early spring

May the snow that falls today bring abundant blessings

Pile up—every wish, every prayer, all of it

Believing no night lasts forever
