The Story

Ono no Komachi, the Heian beauty whose name became legend, weaves the fading of the blossoms and the fading of her own beauty into a single poem through virtuoso double meanings — 'furu' is both the falling rain and the passing years. Our song answers her lament across a thousand years: on a rainy day the modern heroine finds an old photograph and says what Komachi could not — 'even so, I am still shining today.' Beauty does not simply end; like the flowers, it comes around again.

Lyrics

Japanese

Garu JP

Verse 1

Pre-Chorus

Chorus

Verse 2

Pre-Chorus

Chorus 2

Bridge

Breakdown

Chorus

Verse 3

Chorus

Final Chorus

English

The spring rain keeps falling on

In the corner of a half-tidied room

My hand stops at a faded photograph

Me, smiling under the cherry blossoms

The girl I was that day shines too bright

I almost closed the album softly

The color of the flowers has faded

In vain, while I watched the long rains fall

Is it rain that falls, or time that passes?

Beyond the seasons I raced through

Before I knew, the blossoms had begun to fall

I drew the self I longed to be, believing

Seventeen, that spring before the mirror

Wanting love and dreams and everything

Days too precious to waste on sleep

Outside the seasons I kept running through

How many times did the cherries bloom?

The color of the flowers has faded

In vain, while I watched the long rains fall

Down the roads I never chose

Was another me smiling there?

Chin in hand by the rainy window

Long ago, in a corner of the capital

A woman called by a flower's name

Sat chin in hand by the long-rain window

Watching the months and days go by

Beautiful things are like the flowers

Precious because they fade

The color of the flowers has faded, all in vain

While I lived this life, watching the long rains fall

The color of the flowers has faded

In vain, while I watched the long rains fall

Is it rain that falls, or time that passes?

Beyond the seasons I raced through

Before I knew, the blossoms had begun to fall

I open the window after the rain

Wet petals are shining in the light

Fallen blossoms return to the earth

And bloom again when spring returns

The color of the flowers has faded

In vain, while I watched the long rains fall

Is it rain that falls, or time that passes?

I raced through it all

The color of the flowers has faded

And now I can say: that's all right

Like rain that falls and clears again

Like flowers that wither and come round again

Today's me is surely shining too

While I watched the long rains fall...

While I watched the long rains fall...
