A mid-Heian woman poet, daughter of the chief priest of Ise and granddaughter of Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu. She served Empress Shōshi alongside Murasaki Shikibu and Izumi Shikibu, and her daughters also became poets. One of the Late Classical Thirty-Six Immortals, she has about fifty poems in imperial anthologies. Her Hyakunin Isshu poem was famously improvised when Murasaki Shikibu passed to her the honor of receiving double cherry blossoms sent from the old capital of Nara, and Michinaga demanded a verse on the spot.
