The Story

Yamabe no Akahito, a Nara-period court poet later honored as a 'sage of poetry,' composed this on a journey when Mount Fuji rose suddenly into view from the shore at Tago Bay. He never says 'beautiful' — he simply sets down what he saw, and the awe recreates itself in the reader: emotion conveyed without a single word of emotion. Our lyrics honor that method — a modern traveler on a night bus meets the same Fuji, and the song never once names what it feels.

Lyrics

Japanese

Garu JP

Verse 1

Build-Up

Chorus

Verse 2

Build-Up 2

Chorus 2

Bridge

Breakdown

Final Chorus

Outro

English

Slamming the door on words I said too far

Onto a night bus, not even checking where

Sinking the endless notifications into my pocket

I sink into the very back seat

Waking to light through the curtain's gap

I stepped off the bus at the Fuji River rest stop

Breathing the cold air in deep

I run up to the observation deck —

Coming out to the shore of Tago Bay, I see

The snow-white peak of Fuji

A white summit filling all my sight

Burning in the morning sun

"So the world was this wide all along"

And the snow keeps falling, falling

From sea to sky, in a single brushstroke

Morning light traces the ridgeline

However many times the ages change the brush

No one can erase this one stroke

The tension spills from my shoulders

My clenched hand quietly opens

And the wind pushed my back —

Coming out to the shore of Tago Bay, I see

The snow-white peak of Fuji

The nights we argued, the silent mornings

It wears its snow unchanged through all of them

Saying nothing, simply being there

And the snow keeps falling, falling

A traveler of long ago stood on this ground

And caught his breath at the same whiteness

The breath he caught unraveled into song

I can hear it from beyond the waves —

Coming out to the shore of Tago Bay, I see the snow-white

Peak of Fuji, where the snow keeps falling

I haven't decided the words to say sorry

But I know exactly where I'm going home to

I took only a single photograph

The rest I burned into my eyes

Beyond the window of the bus ride home

The snow keeps falling, falling

The snow keeps falling...
