The 57th emperor of Japan, son of Emperor Seiwa. Enthroned at the age of nine in 876, he was forced to abdicate in 884 by the regent Fujiwara no Mototsune, who cited his violent and erratic conduct, and was replaced by Emperor Kōkō. He lived on in retirement for more than sixty years. His only poem in an imperial anthology is the Hyakunin Isshu verse comparing his deepening love to the pooling waters of the Mina River below Mount Tsukuba, sent to the princess who later became his consort.
筑波嶺の 峰より落つる みなの川
恋ぞつもりて 淵となりぬる
Tsukubane no mine yori otsuru Minano-gawa / koi zo tsumorite fuchi to narinuru
Just as the Mina River, falling from the peak of Mount Tsukuba, gradually becomes a deep pool, so my love has gathered and gathered until it too has become a deep pool.
