喜撰法師(きせんほうし)

An early Heian monk named among the Six Poetic Geniuses in the preface to the Kokinshū, yet almost nothing is known of his life. His poem on living in a hermitage southeast of the capital, on Mount Uji, is the only one securely attributed to him. Tsurayuki's preface remarks that his language is faint and his poems hard to grasp from beginning to end. A treatise on poetics bearing his name is considered a later forgery.

わが庵は 都のたつみ しかぞ住む
世をうぢ山と 人はいふなり
Waga io wa miyako no tatsumi shika zo sumu / yo o Ujiyama to hito wa iu nari

My hut lies southeast of the capital, and I live here in peace of mind. Yet people, I hear, call it Mount Uji — the hill where one hides away, weary of the world.
