A mid-Heian poet, grandfather of Kiyohara no Motosuke and great-grandfather of Sei Shōnagon. He held only low offices but was a noted player of the koto and a friend of Ki no Tsurayuki and Fujiwara no Kanesuke. Seventeen of his poems appear in the Kokinshū and some forty in imperial anthologies overall; he is one of the Late Classical Thirty-Six Immortals. His Hyakunin Isshu poem asks where the moon can lodge among the clouds on a summer night so brief that dawn comes while it is still evening.
