mid-Heian period · ?–939Minamoto no Muneyuki

A mid-Heian poet, grandson of Emperor Kōkō, who was reduced to commoner status with the surname Minamoto in 894. He served as governor of several provinces but never attained the rank his birth seemed to promise, and a tale records him lamenting his lack of advancement. One of the Thirty-Six Immortals, he has fifteen poems in imperial anthologies. His Hyakunin Isshu poem on the loneliness of a mountain village in winter, when both visitors and grasses dwindle away, is from the Kokinshū.
