A late Heian nobleman and poet of the Uda Minamoto line who rose to Provisional Major Counselor. Like Fujiwara no Kintō before him, he was celebrated for mastery of waka, Chinese verse and music alike, and as the elder statesman of the poetic world he judged many contests and wrote a critique of the Goshūishū anthology. Late in life he was posted to Kyushu as Provisional Governor-General and died there. About eighty-five of his poems appear in imperial anthologies. He was the father of Minamoto no Toshiyori. His Hyakunin Isshu poem describes the autumn wind visiting a reed-thatched hut at evening.
夕されば 門田の稲葉 おとづれて
蘆のまろやに 秋風ぞ吹く
Yū sareba kadota no inaba otozurete / ashi no maroya ni akikaze zo fuku
When evening comes, the autumn wind visits my humble reed-thatched hut, rustling the rice leaves in the field before my gate.
