You may try to fool me with a fake rooster's cry before dawn, but this is not the Hangu Pass — the Barrier of Meeting Hill will never let you through.
Sei Shōnagon was a lady-in-waiting of the mid-Heian period who served Empress Teishi, consort of Emperor Ichijō. Author of the essay collection The Pillow Book, she was famed at court for the observant eye of "In spring, the dawn" and for her quick, ready wit. She never hid her brilliance—so much so that Murasaki Shikibu, in The Diary of Lady Murasaki, described her as "a person who was dreadfully pleased with herself" (a smug, self-important person).
This poem is not a confession of love but the decisive blow in a battle of wits. Fujiwara no Yukinari left late one night with the excuse that "the cock has crowed, so I must be going." The next morning, when Sei Shōnagon teased him about it, Yukinari parried with "that was the story of the Hangu Pass, you know—like Lord Mengchang, who had the barrier opened with an imitation cock's crow, I too was hurried along by the cock." Sei Shōnagon shot back at once with a poem: "An imitation cock's crow may open the Hangu Pass, but the barrier of Ōsaka (the barrier of meeting me) will never, ever open." A poem that lightly won a game of love with intellectual wit built on a Chinese classical allusion—the foremost woman of letters of her age, living up to her name.
We read this not as a wistful love song but as the "signature line" of a woman of letters who never lost at words, settling a game of push and pull with a single stroke of wit. The structure—seeing straight through the fake cock's crow, that is, the transparent excuse, and deflecting it—we translated into a modern late-night exchange. The trick is the reveal at the end: "Honestly, I decided long ago, but I'm not going to tell you that easily." Not a rejection; a song that closes on the allure of a game played with plenty of composure.
Playing cold on purpose, sometimes
Lining up teasing words, sometimes
How can he get me to fall for him
His hand is all too easy to read
Not saying it himself, wanting me to
Your little scheme — I see right through
Even if you fake the rooster's cry to fool the guard
The Gate of Meeting Hill won't open in the night
No matter how sweet your words piled high
I'm not going to say "I love you" first
Thought I'd melt? You sweet thing
I love flipping expectations like this
Lightly deflecting, giving a smile
Because I'm not saying it first
Bringing up other girls on purpose
Testing whether I'll get jealous, right
That part of you is a little cute
But that trick isn't going to move me
You think losing means falling for real
So you can't say it — I know that too
Even if you fake the rooster's cry to fool the guard
The Gate of Meeting Hill won't open in the night
Teasing, testing, keeping me waiting
You want to stay somewhere it doesn't hurt you?
Old tricks and new traps alike
Already visible — from a thousand years ago
I'll slip past with a wink
Because I'm not saying it first
The one who never lost with words to anyone
Is laughing across a thousand years
The love she won with wit and pride
Rides in this song, still ringing
Even if you fake the rooster's cry to fool the guard
The Gate of Meeting Hill won't open in the night
Even if you fake the rooster's cry to fool the guard
The Gate of Meeting Hill won't open in the night
You want to hear my answer that badly?
Then you say it first
The truth is, I've decided long ago
But I'm not going to tell you that easily
The key to this gate — I haven't thrown it away
I'm waiting, until you say it
The gate won't open... until you say it...
