A late Heian statesman, eldest son of the regent Fujiwara no Tadazane, who held the offices of regent and chancellor for decades and rose to Chancellor of the Realm. His feud with his father and younger brother Yorinaga erupted in the Hōgen Rebellion of 1156, from which he emerged on the winning side. He took Buddhist vows in 1162 and lived at Hosshō-ji temple. A distinguished Chinese poet and calligrapher, founder of the Hosshō-ji style of writing, he sponsored many poetry contests and has about seventy poems in imperial anthologies. Jien and Kujō Kanezane were his sons.
わたの原 漕ぎ出でて見れば ひさかたの
雲居にまがふ 沖つ白波
