A mid-Heian poet about whom little is known. He qualified as a student of letters in 910, served in the government headquarters in Kyushu, and was appointed governor of Iki in 920 but is said to have died before taking up the post. Only five of his poems survive in imperial anthologies. His Hyakunin Isshu poem, composed on the mountain road over Shiga, imagines the autumn leaves fallen into a stream as a weir that the wind itself has built to dam the current.
山川に 風のかけたる しがらみは
流れもあへぬ 紅葉なりけり
The weir the wind has built across the mountain stream — it turns out to be autumn leaves, gathered where they could flow no further.
