What the poem says

I cannot know whether your heart will remain unchanged forever. This morning my thoughts are as tangled as my black hair, and I am lost in brooding.

The Story

Historical Background

The very end of the Heian period. The poet, Taikenmon-in no Horikawa, was a lady-in-waiting and poet who served Taikenmon-in Shōshi (Tamako), consort of Emperor Toba, and is counted among the Thirty-Six Female Poetic Immortals. She lived in the same era as Saigyō and Retired Emperor Sutoku.

The Poet's Heart

The anxiety that surges in precisely right after being loved. The urge to cry in the very middle of happiness, sealed into thirty-one syllables.

What We Put into the Lyrics

We read "tangled, this morning I am lost in thought" on the morning after a night together as the contradiction of wanting to cry while standing in the middle of happiness. "Trusting and doubting are made of the same pain"—without denying the anxiety in the original, this song's answer is to say "and still I choose you," calling it love, anxiety and all. In the Bridge we overlaid "combing" the hair with "untangling" the anxiety, and reflected the double structure of a quiet morning and a tangled heart in the sound as well: bossa nova crossed with a high-speed beat.

Garu JP

Verse 1

Pre-Chorus

Chorus 1

Verse 2

Pre-Chorus 2

Chorus 2

Bridge

Drop

Final Chorus

Outro

Nagakaramu (Senzai Wakashu / Hyakunin Isshu No.80) Garu JP

Morning spills through the gap in the curtains

I run my fingers through my tangled hair

Beside me, the soft sound of your breathing

I watch you quietly, careful not to wake you

I should be right in the middle of happiness

So why do I feel like crying?

"Will your heart stay long?" — I cannot know

How long is the "always" you spoke of?

Like my black hair falling into tangles

My heart unravels into the morning

I wish time would stop right here

One by one, I retrace

The words you whispered last night

The lips that said "I love you" —

In your dreams, whose are they now?

Believing and doubting

Are made of the very same pain

"Will your heart stay long?" — I cannot know

The morning sun strokes my hair

Hold me, the doubting me

Without a word, once more

I wish time would stop right here

If you cannot promise forever

Then just give me now

My tangled hair, my tangled heart —

Untangle them with your fingers

Will his heart stay long? I cannot know — like my black hair

Tangled, this morning I sink into thought

"Will your heart stay long?" — I cannot know

And still, I choose you

Every time my black hair tangles

I will fall in love with you again

I'll call it love, doubt and all

Tangled, this morning...

Inside the continuation of your dream
