The Story

歌のものがたり

Ariwara no Yukihira (818–893), elder brother of the famous poet Narihira, composed this at his farewell banquet in 855 when he was posted to distant Inaba province. The poem hides a double wordplay: 'Inaba' echoes 'if I go away,' and 'matsu' means both 'pine tree' and 'to wait.' Instead of tears, he waves goodbye with a smile and a pun — grief rephrased as a bright promise. We recast it as a modern song of leaving town: a moving box that couldn't hold the scent of your hometown, and one word from someone dear — 'I'll be waiting' — that makes the luggage light. A thousand years ago someone turned a promise into a song, and he truly did come home. So will I.
