The Story

Historical Background

The Nara period, New Year's Day of 759 (Tenpyō Hōji 3). Ōtomo no Yakamochi, away from the capital as Governor of Inaba, composed it at a New Year's banquet he held at the provincial office. It is the poem that closes the Man'yōshū, an anthology of more than 4,500 poems; Yakamochi lived long after this, but left not a single poem more.

The Poet's Heart

"Like the snow falling today, at the start of spring in the new year, may good things pile up ever higher"—at the outset of a posting far from the capital, a prayer that chose blessing over grievance. The long history of poetry in the Man'yōshū closes quietly with this forward-looking verse.

What We Put into the Lyrics

The lyrics layer Yakamochi's heart, greeting the new year at a post far from the capital, onto a modern "winter of starting over." On a night when nothing but excuses for why things aren't working pile up, snow falls. Pile up, pile up, let only good things pile up—a forward-looking song that prays straight ahead in the midst of adversity.

Lyrics

English

Beyond the window, the town turns white

Excuses pile up over what just won't go right

I didn't abandon the capital—it abandoned me

On a night I sulked like that, snow begins to fall

At the start of a brand new year

As if counting an untouched day

In the new year, at the beginning of early spring

May the snow that falls today bring abundant blessings

Pile up, pile up—only the good things, pile up

In these hands, I wait for spring

Born into a noble house in the land of Inaba

I bend beneath the weight of the name I inherited

The clan that once flourished is now a distant past

Like watching a sinking ship drift away

Carrying words of celebration through the feast

But truly, I was praying for a spring of sprouting greens

In the new year, at the beginning of early spring

May the snow that falls today bring abundant blessings

Pile up, pile up—only the good things, pile up

On this unfavored day, I wait for spring

In the new year, at the beginning of early spring

May the snow that falls today bring abundant blessings

The ancient one too saw this same snow

And was praying for tomorrow to come

The light snow will melt and become a river

Crossing fields, to the sea, beyond time

In the new year, at the beginning of early spring

May the snow that falls today bring abundant blessings

Pile up—every wish, every prayer, all of it

Believing no night lasts forever
