The Story

歌のものがたり

Historical Background

Teishinkō, that is, Fujiwara no Tadahira (880–949), rose to Regent and Grand Minister of State and laid the foundation for the Fujiwara clan's golden age. This poem has a true story behind it. When the retired Emperor Uda made an excursion to the Ōi River (at Arashiyama in Kyoto), the autumn leaves of Mount Ogura were so magnificent that he let slip, "I wish I could show this scenery to my son, Emperor Daigo, too." Tadahira, who was in his retinue, turned that wish into this poem and conveyed it to the emperor — and the emperor's excursion actually took place. Shūi Wakashū, Miscellaneous/Autumn 1128.

The Poet's Heart

"Autumn leaves on the peak of Mount Ogura, if you have a heart, wait without scattering until one more gyōkō (an imperial visit)." A personified appeal to the leaves — a gentle request to nature. At its root lies the wish "I want to show this beauty to someone I care about." When we see something beautiful, we cannot keep it complete within ourselves — someone's face comes to mind. A refined poem that turns that universal feeling into a favor asked of the autumn leaves.

What We Put into the Lyrics

A song for someone who has come upon breathtaking autumn leaves. Even if you take a photo with your phone, this color won't come out. A picture isn't enough, so I'll bring them here — "don't scatter, wait for me." When you see something beautiful, you find someone you want to see. A spectacular view kept to yourself is just a little lonely. The Bridge goes back a thousand years: a retired emperor murmured "I want to show my son too," a minister turned it into a poem, and the emperor really came — a true story of a poem moving people. The Final chorus is the autumn leaves, looked up at side by side with "that person" you brought along. "Thank you for waiting." Did the leaves have a heart? Perhaps the fact that they still turn color every year, a thousand years on, is their answer.
